1.  BY whom, Lord, shall Jacob arise 

     Amidst the foes and snares 

     Amazing treat wonderful sight 

     All but not in accord.


2.  By whom, Lord, shall Jacob arise 

     Foes, with evil enthral 

     Triumphal and with vernal joy 

     “The end is come” they quip.


3.  By whom, Lord, shall Jacob arise 

     Can anyone express

     The withered, and sore famish’d oak 

     Can it evermore bloom?


4.  O Lord my God, it is Thy work 

     No one else can perform;

     Thy sullen dew on Jacob seed 

     Shall arise and live.  Amen
